January 3, 2009

"Today was the last trip of our 2008 season and the first trip of the new year!!! We started with some snow, a little liquid sunshine and even found the real thing! Our first wildlife of the day was our first of 5 bald eagles for the day on Jetty Island. We then saw the 2 California Sealions that fancy the green marker coming out of the marina. They were very vocal as a third Sealion was trying to join them on the already crowded marker. He had no sucess and continued on to the floats by the Navy base. We headed out around Possesion Point on Whidbey Island were we encountered Common Murres (diving seabirds) and Common Loons in their winter plumage! Our guests were treated to some brown eyed rock sausage (aka harbor seals) hauled out just north of the entrance to Hoods Canal and a mated pair of bald eagles perched above them. We had harbor porpoise playing in the waves as we made our way back down toward Possesion Point. We also saw white winged scoters (a diving sea duck), Rhinocerus Aucklets and Ancient Murlets. Our passengers recieved "Just a fluke" passes to come enjoy another wonderful cruise with us until till they see a whale!!" -Naturalist Jami Nagel
